Staff Spotlight: Allison Phelps

In my opinion, learning together is working as a team, having each other's back, sharing ideas and always reassuring one another that we can make a difference. And, everyone is involved, this includes teachers, parents, and students. It takes a team to make things happen.

Allison Phelps, originally from Clemmons, North Carolina, earned a B.A. in elementary education from High Point University in 2006 and an M.A. in reading education from East Carolina University in 2012.

Phelps currently serves as a fifth-grade teacher and as a member of the Academy’s curriculum, communication and leadership committees. Read on to learn more:

Why did you choose to work at the Academy?
I chose to work at the Academy to make a difference. Education is important and I want to work to develop the whole child - each of them - by giving more of what they need on an individual level. Smaller class sizes mean more interaction one-on-one with students. Building a relationship with them allows for more connections academically. When they trust, they learn.

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy?
There are so many qualities that I love about the academy. We are a family; we believe in one another and work together to ensure all students receive the best education possible. I consider it an honor to be a part of such a wonderful group of educators. It's such a warming feeling to come to work each day knowing WE are making a difference!

How are you impacting education in your community?
My number one goal is to build positive relationships with families and build trust in students. I want them to feel like they are a part of something and to believe in themselves no matter what. Also, by serving on some of the Academy’s committees, I get to take an active role in the school and help out as needed.

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
Science

The Academy has a reading literacy focus. What is your favorite book?
Charlotte's Web by E. B. White

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy. What does "learning together" mean to you?
In my opinion, learning together is working as a team, having each other's back, sharing ideas and always reassuring one another that we can make a difference. And, everyone is involved, this includes teachers, parents, and students. It takes a team to make things happen.

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy.
I have developed a bond with my grade-level team over the past two and a half years that encourages me to stay positive, have faith in my teaching and grow as I strive to do my very best each and every day. In addition, I work to build relationships with my students. I have had several experiences where my students have opened up to me and we have learned together. Having them open up to me and getting to KNOW them is a daily goal of mine.

Just for fun, what is your favorite candy?
Plain M&Ms
