Staff Spotlight: Bernadette Sexton

My favorite part about working at the Academy is when students say that they don't want to leave school — they want to stay longer. I love knowing that our students know they are loved and appreciated.

Bernadette Sexton, originally from Aklan, Philippines, earned a B.S. in management accounting from Filamer Christian University in 2003. Sexton serves as one of the Academy’s Exceptional Children (EC) teacher assistants. Read on to learn more:

Why did you choose to work at the Academy?
Everyone at the Academy works as a team. We work together like we are family and support each other.

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy?
My favorite part is when students say that they don't want to leave school — they want to stay longer. I love knowing that our students know they are loved and appreciated.

How are you impacting education in your community?
First, I stay positive. This helps me to show the students that we can work together and that learning and education are so important. Our shared commitment to positivity and learning results in progress and changes that our students’ families can see.

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
Math and Science

The Academy has a reading literacy focus. What is your favorite book?
Draw Your World: How to Sketch and Paint Your Remarkable Life by Samantha Dion Baker

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy. What does "learning together" mean to you?
Learning together means that you are both open to learning and willing to help others.

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy.
We regularly learn together by being flexible and ready to help each other. For example, if a teacher needs help in the classroom, for whatever reason, one of us will jump in and help out however we can. We have a shared responsibility to each other and to the school.

Just for fun, what is your favorite candy?
Milk chocolate
