Staff Spotlight: Brittany Hendricks

I think "learning together" means always working to understand and learn from others. For example, during the past year, I had to adjust to online teaching and find the best ways to meet my student's needs online. 

Brittany Hendricks, originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, earned a B.S. in elementary education from North Carolina State University in 2016, and an M.A. in reading education from Appalachian State University in 2021. Additionally, she was selected as a student speaker at the Spring 2021 Commencement hooding ceremony for App State’s Master of Arts in Reading Education degree program. Hendricks currently serves as a Kindergarten teacher.

Why did you choose to work at the Academy?
I was really excited about the opportunities at the Academy and the amazing work that was happening!  

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy?
It is such a supportive and encouraging environment in which to work and learn every day. 

How are you impacting education in your community?
I strive to find better ways to meet my students’ needs while acting as a role model for my students to always keep learning. 

I recently finished a master’s degree in education, so this is an example of how I continue to learn and grow as an educator. 

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
Math

The Academy has a reading literacy focus. What is your favorite book?
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis 

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy. What does "learning together" mean to you? 
I think "learning together" means always working to understand and learn from others. For example, during the past year, I had to adjust to online teaching and find the best ways to meet my student's needs online. 

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy. 
Each day is a chance for students and teachers to learn something new and to get better at something. This happens daily through collaboration with my team and also through teaching and learning from my students.
