Staff Spotlight: Hannah Cope

The Academy really focuses on relationships with our parents and families. This helps build a relationship of trust between the school and the surrounding community — a relationship that is sometimes neglected. When families feel comfortable with their child's school, all children receive a better education. It takes families, teachers, and the surrounding community to build a strong school.

Hannah Cope, originally from Summerfield, North Carolina, earned a B.S. in elementary education and an M.Ed. in elementary education from North Carolina State University in 2016 and 2018 respectively. She serves as one of the Academy’s fourth-grade teachers, as well as on the Academy’s Lego committee and the MTSS (Multi-Tiered-System of Support) committee which focuses on ensuring all students are receiving the academic support and interventions they need to be successful. Why did you choose to work at the Academy?
The mission of the Academy includes focusing on the whole child. This means educating and caring for children in every aspect of their lives; and helping them develop not as just students, but as people, too. Having that as the foundation of a school defined an ideal workplace for me.

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy?
I have really appreciated how staff members are willing to help one another and collaborate to build the best learning experience for our students!

How are you impacting education in your community?

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
Reading

The Academy has a reading literacy focus. What is your favorite book?
The Giver by Lois Lowry

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy. What does "learning together" mean to you?
Learning together means that EVERYONE is learning. We all expect students to learn, but the Academy emphasizes that teachers continue to learn along with students — this ensures that our school constantly evolves and improves.

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy.
Each year, there are many professional development opportunities for staff to grow and learn new and innovative ways to engage students. For example, we have received training in Lego robotics and are implementing that into our classrooms to give students a new and exciting way to interact with the curriculum.

Just for fun, what is your favorite candy?
Almond Joy and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
