Staff Spotlight: Jazz Brown

I am impacting education by pushing students to do their best in all they do. 

Jazz Brown, originally from Walnut Cove, North Carolina, earned a B.S. in social work from Winston-Salem State University in 2018, and is currently enrolled in Appalachian State University’s Master of Social Work program. Brown serves as the social worker at both App State lab schools, Academy at Middle Fork and Academy at Elkin. Read on to learn more:

Why did you choose to work at the lab schools?

I chose the lab schools because I felt at home when I began my internship there.

What's your favorite part about working at the lab schools?

My favorite part about working at the lab schools is the staff’s eagerness to help students reach their educational and personal goals.

How are you impacting education in your community?

I am impacting education in my community by pushing students to do their best in all they do.

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?

Math

A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the lab schools. What does "learning together" mean to you? 

Learning together means becoming united to increase our knowledge of the topic at hand.  During our CARE team meeting, where we discuss the needs of the whole child — attendance needs, health care needs, academic needs, and overall family needs — we come together to learn more about the students and work together to fix any situations that may have arised.
