Staff Spotlight: Marla Cantrell

As the teacher, I hope to be introducing the students to new ideas, but I always let them know when they teach me something new, too!  I like to tell them, "You taught the teacher!" That always gets a smile and encourages them to keep learning!

Marla Cantrell, originally from Belews Creek, North Carolina, earned a B.A. in elementary education from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 1990. She currently serves as a first-grade teacher and as a member of the school’s Green Team, where she has been helping everyone become more conscious of recycling. Read on to learn more:

Why did you choose to work at the Academy?
I love teaching and wanted to be part of the change to this school and the community. I hoped that we would be able to make a positive difference in the school, community and families.

What's your favorite part about working at the Academy?
I love the small class sizes!  It allows me to really get to know my students and work with them more on their level.

How are you impacting education in your community?
I offer words of praise and hugs to my students! Also, I have been teaching in this area for 23 years and work to involve the community with the school. For example, I invite my church and Sunday school class to help with school events and to assist families when they are in need.

What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
Reading

The Academy has a reading literacy focus. What is your favorite book?
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and illustrated by Ruth E. Harper and Nancy M. Leak

“Learning together” is a core commitment of the Academy. What does "learning together" mean to you?
As a group, we are all learning together, and learning NEVER stops, no matter how old we are.

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy.
As the teacher, I hope to be introducing the students to new ideas, but I always let them know when they teach me something new, too!  I like to tell them, "You taught the teacher!" That always gets a smile and encourages them to keep learning!

Just for fun, what is your favorite candy?
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
