Melanie Hicks-Lane, originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, serves as the Academy’s Administrative Support Assistant and School Finance Specialist. She holds a Nursing Assistant Certification from Forsyth Tech in Winston-Salem. Hicks also loves volunteering as a mentor to a fifth-grade female student. Read on to learn more:
Why did you choose to work at the Academy?
I was and am very excited about a lab school serving our students with the support of the university.
What's your favorite part about working at the Academy?
It’s really interesting to work with Appalachian and learn how the university supports the school and the students.
How are you impacting education in your community?
In my role, I get to support the Academy’s teachers and administrators by combining education with business.
What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
Math

Describe an experience where you "learned together" at the Academy.
I had an experience helping one of our families from abroad. They came to the office for a parent conference and after talking with the parents and learning more about their culture, I had a better understanding of the adults and children in that household.
